  • Solar Power

We have recently installed solar power to 18 on Coral and The Loft.  It is a grid-tided system at this stage, which means that during the day and when it is sunny, the house is run on solar power.  It has limited battery storage,  and when necessary will use the electricity supply to boost the power required.  However during loadshedding, especially at night, we ask that guest are considerate and do not use the kettles, hairdryers, heaters and any other appliance that will pull too much power from the battery. This will ensure that there is plenty of reserve for lights, tv's and wifi .

  • Power outages and loadshedding

We live with the daily reality of having rolling power cuts, sometimes 2 to 3 times a day for 2 to 4 hours at a time. The house is equipped with emergency rechargeable lights to ensure that you are never in the dark. We have a back-up water tanks, pressure pump and generator should the power be off over longer periods or the solar power is taking strain. Please note that during loadshedding the lack of power can affect local data networks and the WiFi will not work. We have gas stoves for cooking and gas top kettles to ensure that you can get your morning coffee!

  • Water resources

Our local municipal water relies on electrical pumps to pump water from the local water source to the filtration and water purification system, It is then pumped to header tanks and gravity fed to the village. We have plenty of water, however when there are power outages they can not pump water and during busy periods we run out of municipal water. The local rate payers association and community does their very best to ensure that we dont run out of water, but sometimes it is unavoidable. We have a back-up rain water tanks, pressure pump and generator should the power be off over longer periods.

Kei mouth on the wild coast

Where are we situated?

Pinned on Google maps as Kei Mouth Guest Lodge; 18 on Coral, The Loft & Nguni House is tucked away on Coral Street, just off the main road, with distant glimpses of the Kei River and Sea. It is a comfortable walk to the river and ferry crossing, and a short drive to the main bathing beaches. Its not on the beach, but the beach is not far away and you can hear the sea crashing!
